Dextera Inflamatio: A View From Within

Praedium Archive
Intercepted communication of internal Fire Guild business.

The Burning Hand is a symbol of power. A tower erected in a city is a symbol to all who see it, whether they comprehend it or not. Dextera Inflamatio rules here, regardless of local government or law. Our purpose, and our highest ideal, is mastery; a perfect control over perfect power. As a novice in the Guild, you will learn the principles of power, what they mean, and how to master them. Membership in the Guild means you are different than the huddled masses in the cold of the iron city below. You are more than they are, because you have learned unleash the power of the soul. The soul is a fire that blazes within each person. Those you meet out there, eeking out a life that means nothing, are but the smallest of candleflames, softly glowing embers in the burnt out shell of their body. Having been given the Initiation of Fire, you are more than that. Your soul has been relit by your own will, and burns with a health and vigor that they cannot match. The Path of Mastery will teach you to stoke that flame into an inferno, a leashed storm, spinning and crashing and blazing against the very borders of reality, confined only by your discipline. You will take that violence, that potence, that vigor, and you will squeeze it down to the point of a pin, retaining the might of an inferno in the size of a hand. And with that hand, you can do anything.

The Guild will come to control everything by extension of this philosophy. Just as the hand holds a power as vast as a hall, the tower holds a power as vast as a city. The lords of many lands already have become dependant on our power for military victory. To deny us what we wish is to accept military defeat, and thus, destruction of their country and people. Beyond that, our wealth covers the trade ports. If we were to withhold our aid there, trade ships would have no place to sell or purchase their goods. In short, we hold partial military and economic control over the Throne.

Once you advance to the Second Circle, we will show you what your role will be in all this. If you hope to advance farther than that, you had better succeed.

Intercepted letter regarding Dextera Inflamatio

Forward Lance-Commander Junis,

Congratulations on your promotion. As requested, your primer on siege warfare and special weapons and tactics is included with this document. I would be in err, however, if I did not include as a special weapon a word on the Burning Hand. Dextera Inflamatio is perhaps the most often seen of the secretive mage guilds because of their popularity in warfare. Warfare can be found everywhere, and so people from many different lands and cultures have glimpsed them, or heard of one nearby. They are most often called in as special agents during an open ground war, using their control over fire to devastate enemy forces. A well placed Firestorm can be the end of a battle, and against an enemy not similarly equipped or prepared, almost certain victory in that battle for those lucky enough and wealthy enough to hire one. Their role in warfare is not always so straightforward, however, as to simply destroy the opposition. Fire mages have been known to be able to inspire forces with a passion and conviction to fight in the bitterest of winters, the harshest of conditions, and against almost certain defeat. The cost of hiring a Fire Mage to accompany an army, or even a private caravan, into the bitter northlands to protect them from the cold can often be better than the loses to men and animals that may happen if they refuse. Some Mages can even gaze into the flames and see the location of the enemy, their plans..their thoughts. Rumors say they also have power over treachery, able to make an army turn on itself, fly into a brutal rage and hack to pieces anything in it’s way. No one refuses to pay a Magician of Fire for their services.

Outside of warfare, or perhaps in a different war entirely, Dextera Inflamatio is sometimes witnessed along side Church Inquisitors or witch hunters. No one knows the true relationship between the Church and the Burning Hand, but in a hunt for a dangerous wizard like a Necromancer, a Fire Mage is almost always present.

Dextera Inflamatio seems to be the wealthiest of the Mage Guilds, and have towers in several of the major cities in the Throne, and even some dotting the border-lands. It is understood that people of noble bearing or of wealthy trade families have an easier time being accepted into the Guild, though a talented novice without a copper to their name is by no means unheard of if they possess the talent to excel.

I urge you to use caution when dealing with them, sir, as they are selfish to a man. I have not met the Fire Mage who did not place his own self above others in some way, large or small. I’ve seen from taking the privilege of larger rations to declaring incinerated infantry acceptable losses for the success of the operation. Congratulations again on your promotion, and feel free to request additional information as necessary.

The Nature of Sin

The Triumvirate’s rebellion is what brought sin into the world.. When these creatures destroyed their Meaning to create a new Purpose they discarded their Divinity and allowed paths of wickedness to be walked. This was their childish, spiteful act against their creator- to lead Mankind astray and say “See! Your way isn’t perfect!” Were their acts not so destructive they might even be pitied as one might pity a child throwing a tantrum, but that time is long past and any sympathy for these creatures is merely the product of their twisted manipulations. Eons of stewing in their hatred and belief that they could not possibly be wrong have left them bereft of anything of value.

Regarding the nature of the damage they have inflicted, it would seem to me that sin exists in two intertwined, but separate ways. The first is the wound upon the soul of the person taking the sinful path, and the second is the wound inflicted upon the world. Here in Stragosa, I see people struggling with both and that highlights the need for wisdom, courage, and strong atonements for all.

The capacity for a person to sin is a product of the subversive Purpose that the Triumvirate have created. In the world as it was meant to be, God would test themself with all sorts of circumstances and in a world without sin, he would choose a sinless path every time. The most difficult conflicts would be solved and with each, God would grow and Meaning would be gained from the results. In the world that was wounded, we must guard ourselves for paths of darkness exist and they are tempting and easy. They draw us into Meaningless successes and Pyrrhic victories where nothing is truly learned, gained, or resolved and every man and woman looks upon what they have wrought and feels only anxiety or anguish. These paths can range from the venial like drawing you into conflicts and mistakes with too much alcohol, to the deadly of seeking to resolve a feud with an assassin’s blade. The lie that avoids conflict does not resolve it, and the lie will always be found out and make the eventual conflict harder. The Triumvirate have designed their wicked spiral to draw you in with the smallest missteps and you must be watchful to avoid them and right yourself swiftly when you stumble.

This is why atonement is so important. An appropriate atonement should include three parts. The first is the healing of the soul. The penitent should engage in an activity that’s purpose is to rehabilitate, not punish. The penitent should be shown, in this time of openness to the path of Meaning, that their sin is unnecessary and not as rewarding as taking the sinless path. The thief must be shown that their needs will be met by their community. The violent must be shown that conflict can resolved in other ways. The lustful and the gluttonous must be shown that fulfillment and happiness comes not from momentary, distracting pleasures, but from living a good life with good friends.

The second part of sin is that which damages the world, and an atonement must also help to heal the world. Sin manifests in the world as those monsters we call the Night Malefic. These are our sins made manifest.- our Divinity twisted and corrupted by unhealed sin and expressed as Acts upon the world. The world needs healing, too, and so our atonement must not just help ourselves, but our community and the world itself. All of our Acts must do this, but atonement especially is the time when you have most opened yourself to expanding God’s Meaning and are listening to his words in your heart. Therefore, protect yourself and others from the Malefic, but also work with those wise in the faith to resolve them. Give the orphan love and the soldier peace. And seek to right the wrongs of the living and help your neighbors so no more do they turn to sin.

The final part of atonement is simple, but also easily overlooked. Atonement may be difficult, but it must always be possible. There is no shame in seeking new guidance about an atonement to make peace with an enemy who has passed beyond your reach. Seek a path to healing in the wisdom of the clergy and trust them to help you.

Together we can find Meaning and become great- greater than any other race or deceptive creed. Together we are God. We are the Form God takes when poured into the world. Do not be taken in by the tantrums of the Triumvirate. Their paths have no Meaning and their rewards are false. Only the path of Divinity leads to a true victory.

Lady Vera Septwood

Vera Septwood (holy name: Valeria), Born Lion Age 582
3rd child, 2nd daughter of Lord Klaus Septwood, Lord of Zeestadt, and his wife, Lady Ursula.

Siblings:
Elias (heir of House Septwood), Born Lion Age 577
Lilli, Born Lion age 579
Cord, Born Lion age 584
Hans (soon to be anointed as Father Cornelius), Born Lion Age 587

Vera is known to be kind of heart, but with an adventurous spirit unbefitting a Gothic Lady. There have been reports of misconduct at court, rumours of unsavory friendships, and it is said that there were many sightings of her sneaking out of the Salt Keep in Zeestadt unattended as a child.
Currently there are no bids for her hand in marriage, as her elder sister is yet unmarried. She is residing in Stragosa per her father’s allowance and is expected to remain there until a bid for her hand is made or her family calls her home.

Order of the Stars

Order of the Stars

Patron Angel: Cyaniel
Patron Saint: St. William the Penitent

“Fear of the Unknown drives Man to sin far more frequently than the fear Man encounters face to face.”

The Order of the Stars is a mendicant order dedicated to bringing knowledge of Fate to the world. The friars of the Order travel all over Rogalia and beyond, dispensing the wisdom of the Cards to people of all life’s stations. The Cards are illustrated scenes from the Testimonium with symbols that make them compatible with Cyanihim rituals.

“We do not ‘tell the future.’ We reveal the foe.”

The Order will not tell you that something is going to come to pass. Rather a friar will tell you what is holding you back. A reading of the Cards is necessary before any atonement is assigned and confession is an important part of every reading.

“Until you can surpass the mystery of the pagan, you will never replace him.”

The Order of the Stars has a secret mission – to supplant the utility of pagan and magely ritual with the miracles of the Church. Wherever there are people who find it difficult to give up ancient ways, the Order of the Stars will be there to replace old ritual with new. Who will need to consult with the Green Father when this star chart will tell you the best time to plant?

“If everyone can have a taste of magic, how important can mages be?”

The Order of the Stars is in opposition to the Mage Guilds, seeking to reduce their influence whenever possible. To that end, the Order provides refuge and occupation for failed apprentices, gathering esoteric knowledge and experience bit by bit over time. The Order is careful to never directly threaten the Guilds, knowing that Time and Fate are on their side.

Thirsty Thorn

Thirsty Thorn

Unassuming from the outside the interior looks like a giant rose bush. The interior is a near miraculous example of advanced and mysterious wood working marvels. Woven wooden vines carved from rosewood decorate the tavern, serpentining around and amongst the bars various beams, benches, and bar stools. The bar itself is hune from a solid piece of rose wood that is nearly 12 feet long. The stools are intricately carved giant long stemmed roses, complete with thorns. They are one legged, and the tops, with their petals, are shaped so that sitting in them is most comfortable. Patrons are expected to be able balance using the one leg, and should a patron fall from a stool it is a sure sign that they should be cut off. The stone hearth even has the same serpentining rose vines carved into its face blending seamlessly with the woodwork around it. Due to the amount of nooks and crannies that so many intricate vines make pests are a constant problem to the Thirsty Thorn, which is why the owner loves cats so much. Regina is friendly but absent minded, and had the brilliant thought of filling her tavern with cats rather than rodents. It is well known that Regina owns over 30 cats and that these cats keep her bar clean and are often seen watching over patrons from their perches in the wood worked vines and brambles within the business. Such is the marvel of the wood working in the Thirsty Thorn that it is also an instrument itself. In the early summer when the wind blows from down over the hills and into the valley if the windows and doors are kept open in certain arrangements the Thorn will actually produce haunting wind swept melodies from within its walls. Given the door arrangements these melodies can be in major or minor keys giving Regina the ability to choose various moods for her tavern during this time of the year. These winds also bring the scent of the vast gardens from the crimson keep, ensuring that Regina’s bar never smells sour.

Petaller’s Post

Petaller’s Post:

Herbs to Canvas, Quills to Capes. If it is legal to sell it; we have it. If it’s not legal we probably know someone who can get it. Murlte’s got her hand in just about every pie!! Blast!! We don’t sell pie!! Anyway, come on down to the Petallers Post and see what we have.

PS: Pies coming soons.

While many would think that Rosenberg is too good for peddlers, petallers on the other hand are a different story. Murtle is the owner operator of the Petaller’s Post and she knows EVERYONE. Many know her to be fair, honest, and not to suffer fools. She is always on the look for exotic trinkets, new and stylish fashion, as well as ancient and mysterious tomes. Whereas other places use their shop windows as a gateway to the shop Murtle’s appears to be an escape route for its contents. Murtle hasn’t even seen the window in 2 years. Murtle’s store is an amalgamation of every odd shop and antique store ever made. If it exists and you want to buy it, chances are you can find it at Murtles; that is if the store hasn’t swallowed it yet. Also, Murtle’s great great grandmother Ophelia Witchbane is also the progenitor of the Night Market in Rosenberg.

Rosenberg

ROSENBERG

The city of Rosenberg rests comfortably in the shadow of the Vigil; the Crimson Keep rising above the town with the air of a reserved and dignified gentleman- stern edges alluding to his military history while wisps of muted color in the battlements hit at the ease peaceful times has brought to his soul. Once the Crimson Keep had been a fortress built to protect the Gothic citizens of Rosenberg from Hestrali armies across the Vigil, but in the years of peace that followed the entrance of Hestralia into the Throne Rosenberg has become a bustling city devoted to trade, arts and cultural exchange.

Although a town has always existed in support of the Crimson Keep, Rosenberg’s expansion – and the artistic re-birth of the Crimson Keep- was not seen until after the Hestralian – Throne alliance. In its original incarnation the Crimson Keep acted as a military fortress utilizing the geographic advantage provided by the Vigil. The keep is fortified by in-accessibility, built high on a cliff with panoramic views it reigns as a statement of prowess and beauty, a stone behemoth juxtaposed against an expansive sky. As the keep transitioned from active duty to a life of leisure it underwent renovations to better reflect the artistry of the young cities inhabitants. Through the combined vision of master artisans of all variety the Crimson Keep was re-imagined in the image of heaven itself. One of the most noteworthy additions made to the Keep during the renovation period was the addition of expansive rose gardens; which appear to flow between the Keep and the town below. It is said, that if you position yourself in the center of one of the five major roads which divide Rosenberg and look towards the keep (at the appropriate time of day) the Crimson Keep will appear to be haloed in sunlight, against the open sky, floating in a sea of roses.

The Rose Gardens of the Crimson Keep

To say the gardens are a feat of Herbal Mastery is an understatement- the Rose Gardens of the Keep have no likeness anywhere in the Empire. Part labyrinth, part art exhibit the gardens both bring both beauty and security to the Crimson Keep above. One path leads the way through the impenetrable thorns, which can be well defended were advancing forces to try the maze.

The roses themselves are unique among plants; an abnormally large variety yielding a high volume of bright red blooms without experiencing a period of dormancy. In addition to their size and vibrance, the plants have nearly wood-like stems and thorns more closely resemble large, jagged teeth than typical foliage. Theses ‘eternal blooms’ are said- by some of the more pious of Rosenberg- to be a living reminder of the eternal strength and beauty of souls of man. The origins of the Crimson Keep roses are a topic of debate among residents of the city and visitors alike. Some parties believe that the plants were the work of Master Herbalist Clotilda Huber, who was known for carefully cross-breeding plants for artistry as well as usefulness. Others attest that the roses are mundane in origin, but were transformed by the Earth Mage Renke Saur. It has been said that aside from enchanting the roses to grow to an unnatural size and bloom indefinitely Renke was able to call the brambles to life, rearranging the labyrinth if needed to protect the Keep and its occupants.

The Five Streets of Rosenberg

When the city of Rosenberg was first constructed by Architect Trennan Brügger it was built with artistry in mind. The city is laid out in a unique fan pattern of five major streets: Morgengrauen-Straße, Mittagstraße, Nachmittags Straße , Dämmerung Straße and Nacht Straße. Each of the five streets has its own gate, and visitors to the city may choose to arrive through any of the entrances each of which artistically represents the name of the street, and the people who inhabit it. While the five gates are miles apart at the entrance of the city, they are positioned to move closer to one another the deeper you travel into the city, eventually all arriving at the entrance to the rose gardens of the Crimson Keep.

Trennan’s city layout was inspired by a desire to amplify the Crimson Keep’s divine beauty and as such each street was positioned to work as a enormous sundial. As the sun rises on Imperator Tag, the vantage point allowed by Morgengrauen-Straße makes it appear as though the Keep has a halo of light illuminating it. This effect can be viewed on each subsequent street throughout the day, until fightfall when the first moon of summer will bath the Keep in silverlight as viewed from Nacht-Straße.

From each major thoroughfare, a unique sub district has sprung to life and were a visitor to ask a resident of Rosenberg which district was most ‘authentic’ it is likely that she would receive a different answer every time she asked.

Morgengrauen Straße

Morgengrauen Straße is known as the district of dancers and thespians. A stroll down its pale gravel streets would lead a visitor to encounter numerous performers, dancing nimbly in the morning air or rehearsing stage art on one of the numerous alcoved stages built into the allies and side streets. The stages of Morgengrauen have been the birthplace of some of the most moving pieces of theater in the Empire, and recently dancers from the Vermillion Larks (a well known dance troop) traveled to the imperial court to perform at the Emperor’s midwinter ball.

The buildings of Morgengrauen are delicately painted with soft white designs lending it an airy, cleanly appearance. And residences of this district include dancers, actors, tailors and numerous craftsmens who often lend their skills to the staging of productions. Many of the most successful artisans make their homes in airy lofts above the shops of Morgengrauen and can be seen in the early hours enjoying the sunrise view of the Crimson Keep from their quaint balconette. The less established artisans and artists can be found residing in small houses or even renting rooms in one of the many boarding houses that pepper the allies and culdesacs of the district.

Mittagstraße

To walk the streets of Mittagstraße is to gain a preview into the next great fashions of the Empire. Whether it be new styles of armor, weapons, gowns, or shoes chances are if you catch a glance of it in a softly lit window of the Mittagstrabe it’s only a matter of time until its like will spread across the empire. Taylors, Mechanists, Leather Workers and Smiths alike travel from all corners of the empire- new designs in tow- hoping to gain a window feature or a lucrative commision that will launch their career.

The buildings of Mittagsrabe are built with display in mind, featuring large show windows and wide walkways with the majority of living space built behind the shops- as to not deter from the display of the wondrous creations. Some artisans reveal their Hestrali roots by choosing to make their homes in covered caravans, discreetly sequestered in the side gardens of some of the larger shops. Unlike their Hestrali cousin’s these caravans are typically monochromatic and are only decorated with small illusions to the profession of its inhabitants.

Nachmittags Straße

When walking the allies that connect the five streets of Rosenberg a visitor will smell Nachmittags Strabe before they ever set eyes on it. Full of groceries, butcher shops, cheesemongers, bakers, taverns, brewers and wine merchants this neighborhood is best explored with your tastebuds. Much of the cuisine of this city is born out of Rosenbergs Gothan roots, it has been influenced and shaped by travelers, immigrants and visitors alike.

Unlike most of the city, where the occupants live above or alongside their establishments in a predictable fashion the shopkeepers, artisans and cooks of Nachmittags have built their residences in accordance with the specific needs of their cuisine. Some live in cellars, while others are attic dwellers, others live in back rooms of their shops, while some shops appear to be more home than anything else. Many of the businesses boast small arrangements of benches and tables on their doorsteps, allowing patrons to enjoy their wares while surveying the bustle of the lively streets.

One of the most famous locations within Nachmittags is the Thirsty Thorn, a tavern known as much for its masterful wood carvings as its floral cuisine.

Dämmerung Straße

Dämmerung Straße stands out as the district of the tangible arts. Painters , sculptors, and wood workers flock to this sector Rosenberg, where their labors of passion may be placed on display in one of the numerous galleries or perhaps catch the eye of one of the curators employed by House Sauber, tasked with commissioning the next great masterpiece to adorn the alcoves of the Rose Sea. In addition to the artists themselves, Dämmerung Straße attracts merchants and tradesmen who supply the artists and the width of the Dämmerung Straße is far more substantial than most streets in Rosenberg- to allow for large ox-drawn carts to deliver shipments of marble and wood to the artists who will summon artistry from their depths.

Those living in Dämmerung find themselves nestled in small cottages- built as additions or predecessors (it is impossible to tell now) to the large galleries and show rooms. Some of the larger homes overlook small sculpture gardens or have been built to take advantage of the views of the Crimson Keep in the distance. Some of the more devoted artists and their apprentices can be found living alongside their masterpieces in large (but drafty) lofts and workspaces.

Nacht Straße

The Nacht district is well named, as its occupants can be heard best as the night wind rolls through the allies and courtyards this partially residential district. Compared to its four counterparts the Nacht Strabe district would appear primarily a street of high walled residential buildings clustered around artistic courtyard gardens. By night, Nacht Strabe is alive with music and song- the quiet courtyards transformed into performance space for bards and musicians. Some courtyards are open, to allow passers by to wander between their gates at their leisure while others remain locked and guarded only allowing those invited guests to partake in the night performances.

Many of Rosenbergs citizens reside in the Nacht District. Those with the most lucrative incomes residing in the upper levels – or even occupying entire buildings- while more modest merchants often occupied ground or even basement level dwellings. The musicians of the Nacht straub can be found in all levels of living. Some share converted cellar dwellings with a dozen compatriots, while others live alongside their wealthy patrons in the more extravagant upper buildings. Although frowned upon, it is not uncommon for a traveling musician to make a crude camp in one of the gardens, especially during the summer months when the infamous Nachtstraub night market increase the likelihood of their gaining exposure.

Guild Vermogen

This guild is known for their ability to find and distribute goods in both bulk and private quantities. They are also particularly well known for their subtlety in maneuvering markets to their advantage. Getting the best they can out of what they are able to compile. Anyone know that if you seek to work through the Vermogen that you will be accorded a fair market price, but that they will also benefit from your transaction. They are a middle man merchant guild buying and selling various goods of differing quantities from one party to another. They will often take a contract to locate goods of a certain type and quality knowing that their knowledge of markets and economics as well as research into current market trends will garner a much better price than if a client tried to do so themself. They are also known for procuring ludicrously good deals on goods for themselves, and then in turn selling at a fair market value, thus making large sums of capitol. They are in turn the essence of the middle man, and they are very very good at it.

Guild Master:

Reiner Einhart – Johannes is an older man, and has been in the merchant/economics game for quite some time. He has helped to make cities prosper with his trade wisdom and has used his knowledge to be the ruin of many a business and even a lord or two. He has a reputation of being just shy of ruthless. Efficient and often sterile in his business exchanges and endeavors Reiner prefers to keep things professional rather than personal. For all that proceeds him Reiner is not cruel. He has been known to take care of his own with a loyalty that is commendable, and has even been known to donate to charities from time to time. Reiner cares for his community and his guild members and seeks to better them both.

Guild Officers:

Johannes Adlar – Johannes is the officer that is in charge of gathering intel on other businesses and what the market current needs are. He is a competent business man, and enjoys the finer things in life. He is an only child and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He also had a fling with Adelle that sometimes rears its head and causes problems.

Adelle Muller – Adelle is the officer in charge of following current market trends in the area and setting pricing brackets for the guild. Adelle wishes she had never given Johannes the time of day, but alas such is life. She is still professional with him in regards to guild duties, but avoids him otherwise. She is a dutiful woman and takes her role in the guild very seriously. She is the one most likely to take over the guild after Reiner steps down, but Gerda is a close second.

Gerda Schafer – Gerda is the officer in charge of internal logistics for the guild. In terms of Gothics Gerda wears her emotions on her sleeve. She will sometimes openly show how she is feeling and forgetting herself, but soon composes herself. Gerda sometimes get jealous of Adelle and her success and favoritism in the guild. She does not let this show and keeps it inside, but her jealousy sometimes guides her actions.

Masters in the Guild:

Franze Koch – Franze has recently become a master in the guild and is the newest member to this rank. Others find him enjoyable and seek out his company. He works well with others, and makes the best of situations. Is a hard worker. Gets along with most everyone in the guild. He even tries to find the best in Erwin. He thinks Adelle would make a fine leader, and that Gerda brings her own strengths to the guild. Secretly he think Johannes is stuck up.

Erwin Schmidt – Where as Franze is enjoyable and a hard worker Erwin avoids work and is kind of a pain to be around. He has been a master for sometime and finds it a personal affront that he hasn’t been made an officer. He would most likely would have been kicked out by now, if he wasn’t so damned good at his job, and he is a damned good merchant. He secretly longs for Ina.

Hartwin Fischer – Before he joined the guild Hartwin was a farmer. He was personally recruited by Reiner due to his business acumen in selling his produce. Hartwin is prone to drinking in excess but is a kind hearted man who doesn’t hold a grudge, though he doesn’t particularly care for that Erwin fellow, and think the Heidi is sometimes kind of a jerk. Thinks Johannes is stuck up, but appreciates his business Acumen.

Heidi Mayer – Heidi has always loved talking to people, especially when that involved talking people into things. Whether it was a bet, prank, deal, or scheme Heidi has always been adept at convincing people to do what she thinks is good idea. Though she is rarely cruel with her abilities she does enjoy causing antics to ensue and has been chastised in the guild for it at least twice. Her favorite targets of this are Franze and Erwin.

Ina Wagner – Ina is a reserved woman, even by Gothic standards. She rarely shows any emotion in public. Her and Heidi are often at odds because Heidi tries convincing her of things and Ina just stares at her. Ina thinks that Erwin singles her out for his misery, and picks on her more than others because he is threatened by her aptitude, and she is quite skilled in the realms of commerce. Even from a young age she has understood the flow a sale and the trends of a market. Wishes she could be a little more like Gerda.

Isaak Becker – Isaak is a man that tries to do his job as well as he can and go home at the end of the day. He doesn’t really care about fame or glory, he just wants to do his job the best he can and go home to his wife at the end of the day. While he gets along with most people in the guild farely well he has a loathing for Hartwin because Hartwin made untoward advances toward his wife one night in a tavern. Isaak took great a offense to this and has not let go of it. He does not actively undermine Hartwin, but he certainly doesn’t do him any favors. He avoids Heidi when he can, but enjoys Ina well enough.

Journeymen –

Jakob – Jakob is an even keeled man who keeps to himself. His best friend is Isaak Becker, but he holds no grudge for his friends advancement in the guild. In fact he admires him, and wishes him the best. Jakob once worked with Joseph on a job that took them to Hestralia, and has refused to work with the man since. No one knows what happened between them.

Joseph – Joseph is stoic man of his word. Dutiful and loyal, but slightly gruff in demeanor he gets the job done right the first time. Since the trip the Hestralia with Jakob, Joseph has a tendency to keep to himself despite wanting to spend more time with Karla, who he has been pining over for about a year now.

Karla – Karla always has her loved ones back. She will stick up for them when needed and would fight for them when necessary. She is a tenacious worker and hopes to be an Officer of the guild someday. Joseph likes to think he keeps his feelings well hidden but Karla sees them for what they are, if only he were younger she would probably marry him. Karla once challenged another Journeyman named Kaspar to a drinking contest and drank him under the table. She has since gained a mild reputation as a lush.

Kaspar- Kaspar is pious man, and is sure to attend church every Saturday, and many days between. He does however enjoy a good stiff drink from now and then, and can often be seen going to atonement for such small acts of gluttony. He is still embarrassed about the incident with Karla even though it happened over 2 years ago. For all his Piety though Kaspar cannot seem to find it in him to forgive Lars for his offense toward him.

Lars – In his younger years Lars was a bit of spit-fire. He gambled and participated in some rather unsavory hobbies before turning back to the straight and narrow. Not the least of which was having a romantic affair with the fiance of another man. That man was Kaspar. Now guild mates Lars tries to make it up to him but Kaspar will have none of it. Luckily Lars has found a true friend who looks past his previous indiscretions. That friends is Laura.

Laura – Laura is a cunning sales woman, and has been able to close many deals. She strives to be a good and pious woman, but understands that she is only human. As such she is not one to judge others, and appreciates when people are trying to be better than they were, which is why she became such fast friends with Lars, and why she has such a hard time getting along with that judgemental woman Magda.

Magda – Magda strives for perfection in everything she does. This has earned her a reputation as being stuck up and a control freak. Many people find her abrasive, especially Laura, but Magda shrugs it off as them squandering their gifts through laziness. The only exception is her dear Markus. Markus always tries his best, though it is rarely good enough. The two fell in love quickly after meeting and were married shortly after.

Markus – Markus is a man who seeks to be better than he is, and appreciates that his wife Magda pushes him hard to be so. Though sometimes he worries that she finds his attempts futile, which is why Markus sometimes suffers from depression; wallowing in the knowledge that his wife will never think he is good enough. If it wasn’t for his friend Benjamin Markus would be in dire straights indeed. Benjamin brings back Markus’s youth and reminds him to live life a little bit sometimes, which is why Magda disapproves of him.

Apprentices:

Benjamin – Benjamin enjoys life as much as he can while still being dutiful in getting his work done. He is prone to drink and having a good time, which is why his good friend Markus’s wife Magda hates him. But he could care less, he doesn’t have time for people who don’t have time for him. He hopes someday to find true love and live happily ever after. He hopes that person is Michael, at least for this month.

Michael – Michael is man who everything he is into everything he does. Gothics are not known for their passions, and Michael is as stoic as the next, but passion burns bringt and hot under the cold exterior. Michael loves the thrill closing a sale or making a trade contract. He appreciates the finer things in life, but doesn’t snub the rougher things either. He gets along well with his friends Niclaus and Benjamin

Niclaus – Niclaus tries to show his friends the path of the straight and narrow by leading by example and by being close enough to steer them straight when they need it. Niclaus works hard and helps his friends Michael and Benjamin when needed. He longs for Nina, who doesn’t know it.

Nina – Nina enjoys small talk and keeps things reserved and professional while at work. When she is not on a job for the guild though she likes to loosen up a bit. Sometimes this gets her in trouble and can lead to atonements from time to time. She has eyes for several men in the guild including Niclaus and Oskar.

Oskar – Oskar is a hopeless romantics and would love nothing more than sweeping a fair maiden off her feet and winning her hand in marriage. Often subject of his affection is Nina, which causes tension for him and Niclaus, but he also keeps an eye out for other potential suiting options, such as Rachel. He writes poetry and comprises ballads in honor of women’s beauty in his spare time

Rachel – Rachel is a staunch woman who cares for her craft and the church. She is a regular at many church services, but does enjoy to let loose every once in awhile. She makes sure to atone for any transgressions as soon as possible and does her best to help her friend Sibylle.

Sibylle – Sibylle’s tale is one of sorrow. Sibylle was married at a young age to a knight errant, and thought that her life would turn over a new leaf only to have her new husband slain in battle and have the family accuse her of being a jump start money grubbing strumpet. Her name was tarnished but she found work where she could until she ran into Gerda, who took pity on her and has offered her an apprenticeship in the guild. She quickly made friends with Rachel who has helped Sibylle get back on her feet, for which Sibylle is unendingly grateful.

Glasmalerei Guildmaster Goswin Schubert

Guildmaster of Glasmalerei Guild of Rosenberg

Guildmaster Goswin Schubert known to be an incredibly pious and kindly man, whose father was a lowly shoemaker.

Goswin was born in Rosenberg to Ernst and Elke Schubert. Ernst was a kindly and generous man who took great pride is his craft. Young Goswin dutifully followed his father’s instruction and by the age of 9 was of considerable skill. His hands were not yet strong enough but his agile mind compensated. He described tools and implements which would help him to compensate for it. His father commissioned a blacksmith friend to make a couple of them to humor his son. To Ernst’s amazement they worked as Goswin had described. Although it took him longer than a more experienced apprentice, is results were of very high quality.

Ernst praised his son at guild meetings and several older members started using the implements to help them as the strength had started to leave their own hands. Rumors of the young prodigy drifted in Merchant circles and eventually reached the ears of Guild Master Monika Weber, who was then the Guildmaster of the Glasmalerei. She knew Ernst to be a humble, and devout man. If he was moved to such praise then there might be more to it.

Guildmaster Weber, often attended convocation in peasants garb. The purpose was twofold. Firstly, that she might be able to remove the mantle of office and focus on spiritual matters for a time, secondly to be better positioned to hear the voice of the people unfiltered by their compulsion to respect her office. She had been keeping a watch on young Goswin when an event unfolded that would forever change his life.

On this day, Guildmaster Weber had decided to follow 12 year old Goswin home. She did so from a distance so as to remain unobserved. It was a difficult rainy season and the streets were a muddy mess. A peasant woman, heavy with child, tripped in the middle of the street. As expected, young Goswin hurried over to assist her. As he helped her up, he politely asked how she fared. She said she was well and thanked him. Young Goswin looked at her feet. Her muddied toes poked out through worn shoes. Goswin asked her if she’d do him a favor and she replied that of course she would. He then proceeded to remove his own boots and asked if he could have hers.

“I could never young master,” said the woman.

Goswin replied, “Please ma’am. It’s not just a matter of charity. I’ve never seen their like. I’m a shoemaker’s apprentice and i’d they’ve given me an idea.”

The woman eventually relented and blessed him as she walked away with a fine new pair of boots.
As Goswin started off home, barefoot and with worn shoes in hand, the disguised Guildmaster stopped him.
“young man, why did you trick that woman into taking your shoes?”

Goswin studied her for a moment and then responded, “the almighty calls us to be charitable and help one another. It was not simply a trick ma’am. I provided her with a compelling argument that was based in truth. Seeing her shoes did create an idea, for a simple shoe, that would be more readily afforded by those with less coin. I can’t estimate the value of that idea, as i have yet to put it into practice. I wanted to repay her, and she’s a poor woman with child. I assessed my boots to be both something she needed and fair trade. I have other shoes, a walk home in the water will remind me of the blessed life i lead never having wanted as does that good woman. Although my father will at first be displeased he is a good man, and might have done something similar were he present. I feel confident that it will be well. In the end, if nothing else I feel that i have at least attempted to honor to the leonem I wear about my neck.”

The Guildmaster smiled, and said, “you seem to be a good hearted young man.”

Goswin then replied by saying, “May I ask you a question … ma’am?”

the Guildmaster then smiled and replied, “of course. I have pried into your moment, there is no reason I should not return the same.”

Goswin then assured his position as an apprentice under her direct tutelage by saying, “Why does a woman of your station pretend to be poor?”

Taken aback she responded, “how is that then?”

“Well m’lady, your hands are rough as one who works, but there are the ink stains of one who often writes, or likely signs, documents on your fingertips. The ring on your right small finger is diminutive, but of goodly value. A memento I suppose. Though tarnished, your Leonem is of outstanding craftsmanship, and your meticulous enunciation is of one who speaks often and well. You smell of summer flowers and your clothes though of poor quality are very clean. Lastly, i point to your shoes, the topic of our previous discourse. My father’s work is better, but Master Klines work is very highly regarded and demands a high price,” he said.
The feat of mental acuity might have been enough, but the fact that the boy’s tone was not one of chastisement, or denigration at all. He was simply, being inquisitive and denoting the things that had caught his eye.

“I am Guildmaster Monika Weber, and I have a desire to make you my apprentice.”

Goswin replied, “I see. I’d like to finish the work on these new shoes, for the people, first and then, of course, my father must approve. It’s a great honor and I suppose we both know he’d agree,” he smiled, “thank you for the opportunity Guildmaster.”

The story of Goswin’s giving the unknown woman his shoes is well known. Although it is retold that the Guildmaster happened across him by chance, and the subsequent conversation is known to only a very few.
Guildmaster Goswin Schubert rose slowly through the ranks of the Glasmalerei Guild. His relationship with Guildmaster Weber grew throughout this time. Often they were referred to as the Mother and Son (of the Guild). In her last decade of service he was her right hand and he transitioned smoothly into his position.

In his time he has innovated several aspects of the Guild’s work. Not only refining processes at the higher end of the spectrum, but also creating a much easier to produce product that is more readily accessible to lords of lesser means. He is much loved both within the guild and throughout Rosenberg.
He has continued the tradition of attending convocation in unassuming clothing, and it has become a common practice throughout the guild.

Although he has had several apprentices during his career with the guild itself, he has not selected one since the passing of his dear friend Guildmaster Monika Weber.

Since becoming Guildmaster he has spent 1 week, every 3 months, with the Cyanihim Order of the Sacred Glass.
